Mr. Umesh Chandra Banerjee was born on 18th November, 1937. He belongs to a very renowned Barrister Family, Father late Sh. Nalin Chandra Banerjee was a very well-known Criminal and Constitutional Lawyer of the country. He has done his Graduate from Scottish Church College, Kolkata. (1961). and Law from Bar of Inner Temple, London in December, 1964. After his law, he joined Kolkata Bar as a Barrister in 1965 and practiced both in Original and Appellate side of the Kolkata High Court; appointed permanent Judge, Calcutta High Court from 9th January, 1984; appointed as Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court on 1-2-1998; appointed as a Judge of Supreme Court of India on 9-12-1998; retired on 17.11.2002. He is one of the Founder Member of SAARCLAW; Presently President of SAARCLAW, India Chapter.

Designations held (in different Body): He was appointed as a permanent, Judge of Calcutta High Court (1984); Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court (1998); Judge of Supreme Court of India (1998); Chairman of the High Level Committee Constituted by the Government of India pertaining to fire in Sabarmati Express at Godhra in the state of Gujarat; recipient of Shiromony Bikas Award presented by Mother Teresa in 1996 by Shiromony Institute of Delhi; recipient of the International Friendship Association Award; recipient of Son of the Soil Award; recipient of Professional Excellence Award. Presently an Advisor & Adjunct Professor of I.I.T. (Kharagpur) in the Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law; Governing Council Member of Scottish Charge College, Calcutta; Governing Council Member of National Law School, University at Bangalore; Founder President of the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR), a Law University at Hyderabad and presently a Governing Council Member of the University; also involved in professional briefs of varied nature including commercial and other Arbitrations.

He has handled various cases as a High Court and Supreme Court Judge of India. He has published various articles and books in India and abroad.

Presently, he is the President, SAARCLAW (Indian Chapter) for the Last 5 consecutive terms and an ex-co Member of the SAARCLAW (International). At the initiation the International Conference "FORUM OF JUDGES-'87" on protection of Intellectual Property Rights, did take place in 1987 in the City of Calcutta in association with World Intellectual Property Organization (one of U.N. Agencies); he is a Member of International Law Association and participated as a delegate at various International Conferences viz, Indian Delegate at the W.I.P.O. Convention of Judges at Islamabad in 1986; One of the main speaker on Environmental Laws in Dacca, Bangladesh at the 3rd SAARCLAW Meet; participation as a speaker in Sydney, Australia on the Intellectual Property Law and its protection; participated as a W.I.P.O. Expert at the New Delhi Conference in 2001; participated in Brisbane and Sydney as an Indian Delegate on Intellectual Property Law having some emphasis on Copy Right Law. He was the sole Indian Delegate at the Montreal Conference on Sustainable Development in 2002. He is in the panel of Speaker of W.I.P.O.; Chairman of Society of Law & Justice, Calcutta Chapter.He has chaired two Courts of Enquiry, ordered by the Central Government; one in regard to Vayudoot Aircraft Crash near Gauhati in 1989 and another Indian Airlines Aircraft Crash at Imphal in 1991. He has been a Member of Ravi-Beas Water Dispute Tribunal and also chaired the Godhra Commission appointed by central government.
